From Maine Farms to Maine Food Truck

Rolling Fatties is all about supporting Maine farmers and gardeners for lots of reasons. Basically, we want to keep our sky blue, our money in our community, and our friends and Fatty lovers happy and healthy. Here’s how we get food from Maine farms to our Maine food truck…

Meats

Grass Fed Beef from Cold Spring Ranch–Gabe and Molly’s ranch is a pretty majestic place. We can go over and help move cattle, feed them, and be a part of the process that gets healthy food on our table and yours. Cold Spring Ranch in New Portland, Maine can be reached at 207-628-4272.

Pork from Luce’s Meat–Arnold Luce is a pioneer in our local food movement. For years now, his business has been butchering locally raised meats and distributing to restaurants, markets, and individuals throughout Maine. We appreciate and enjoy his nitrate free bacon, his freakin’ hot hot sausage, and his uniformally shaved pork. Luce’s Meats, 207-635-2817.

There are a few places throughout the state that raise meat chickens. We’ve chosen to buy ours from Mainely Poultry. They let their chickens roam, feed them well, and butcher them humanely right on site. We love going to pick up our chicken order in Warren as it allows us to explore another part of Maine for a day. You can find Mainely Poultry in Maine markets or from the Crown of Maine.

Veg

Our first source for veg is our own Fatty Food Garden. We step right out our door to harvest lettuce, tomatoes, corn, peppers, asparagus, cabbage, cukes, kale, carrots, beets, peas, squash, beans, pumpkins, onions, herbs, herbs, and flowers. We source our seeds from Fedco (an awesome co-op that says no to GMOs), we fertilize with compost from Rolling Fatties, and we practice crop rotation and keep chickens to combat bugs naturally. We grow peppers year round in our sunny workshop and we plan to add a small green house to our operation next summer to extend the growing season of our most used crops.

Julie-Parenteau-Cambridge-cropsOur garlic comes from Cambridge Crops, and let me tell you friends and neighbors, it is some gd good garlic! Julie and Matt sell their crop personally, through the Crown of Maine, and they sell their seed to FedCo (supporting those who like to grow their own.)

We purchase fruit and veg we don’t grow from area farmer’s markets, area gardens, and from the Crown of Maine.

Beans

Our beans come from two sources. Green Thumb Farms in Fryeburg, Maine is one and you probably know them as the “State of Maine” beans sold in Hannaford stores across the state. (They are also better known for their Cold River Vodka.)

hello-beans!Our second bean source is a small dry goods farm on Beech Hill in Mercer. They are actually doing some dry goods CSAs this year and can be reached by emailing Julie Zavage at juliezavage@gmail.com.

Grains

We make our own tortillas. We use the best ingredients–lard we render ourselves, aluminum free baking powder, Maine sea salt, and the best flour we can buy. We buy our organic all purpose flour from King Arthur and our organic sifted wheat flour from Maine Grains. Both mills buy their grain from Mainers (King Arthur doesn’t primarily source from Maine and is based in Vermont and 100% employee owned).

Rice is not sourced locally (though experimental rice growing is happening in Maine!) but thoughtfully. Lundberg Family Farms in California grows organic rice and produces high quality rice products. Their commitment to human and environmental health is notable and we choose to support their efforts by purchasing their rice.

Drinks

We love Maine Root Sodas. They are a Fair Trade Certified Organic Soda made right here in the great state o’ Maine.

We also love Carrabassett Spring Water a small company in Peru, Maine bottling Maine’s natural spring water, named for it’s location on the Carrabassett fault line.

Everything Else

All of our other ingredients that we can’t source locally (limes, avocados), we buy from local food distributors specializing in organic food. We buy paper products and aluminum foil that is recycled and recyclable. Any plastic is post consumer created and all the other stuff we buy that is not eco-friendly is meant to last or just irresistible. Basically, we’re doing our best to have a little impact environmentally and have a big impact on your health and happiness. Cheers!
